I have to say I am overall very pleased with the board. I have the assembled v2 w/ knob and out of the box, the inside foams are so thick that there is no flex to the board. They are easy to remove though and after that the flex is really nice. I applied the force break mod you can find in most reviews online (although this v2 fixes most of the pinging issues, there was still some). After that the board sounds pretty much perfect. The one complaint I would have that the plate was not ALU as advertised but some black plastic (not sure whether it is the POM plate, but to the touch it feels more like FRN). The plate itself actually sounds great so no issues there, just the incorrect info on the web. 5* for the value despite any issues above

Can't find any major faults with this - very satisfied

I ordered a Q1 as a gateway keyboard into custom mechanical keyboards, and I have to say that the Q1 satisfies that role to the fullest. It is by no means a perfect board, but the price point combined with the number of things you can do to improve it makes this well worth the buy.

I received the Q1v4 (knob version), fully-built with Gateron Phantom Yellows - a brilliant entry level linear switch that comes pre-lubed so that saves some work. I will be swapping them out at some point, but they are a great starting point. I do wish my kit had come with a coiled cable that comes with the non-knob version and the double-shot OSA PBT keycaps that are included now instead of the ABS ones, but that may be wishing for a bit too much.

The build quality is excellent; the machining is great and anodization is very consistent. Looking inside, I only found one gasket to be adhered at a slight angle instead of parallel to the edge, but that was easy to workaround and an easy fix. Factory lubing of the stabilizers was a little imprecise in some places, but I would not say it was ineffective. If you are a stickler for details, get the barebones kit and work on it yourself with your own switches, lube, and keycaps.

Make no mistake though, I did not do anything to modify it for a few weeks and it was already a definite upgrade from my K4v1 from the original Kickstarter campaign. After some tweaking, I can say it responds well to almost any modifications you make and you will be rewarded for any time you spend making this board your own.

If the layout suits you, and you have the budget, this is a strong recommend from me.

Awesome keyboard, stabs, keycaps. Would buy another one. Wouldn't recommend to pick yellow switches

I genuinely enjoy using this keyboard. I also have a GMMK Pro keyboard, and both are super nice, but I prefer Q1 more because I can use it comfortably with MacOS. My corporate MacBook doesn't allow me to use third-party key mapping software, so it is very convenient that Q1 has MacOS mapping on the hardware level. Another advantage of Q1 over GMMK Pro is that it is much easier to disassemble and mod it. GMMK Pro has way too many screws and everything is super tight inside. Finally, I paid $209 in total for a fully assembled keyboard (that even includes $30 shipping), while for GMMK Pro I paid in total $275 for the keyboard, switches, and keycaps. A significant difference in my opinion.

The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is gateron yellow switches. They are too heavy, so it is almost impossible for me to type fast. Especially painful to use them for coding. Those were the only option during my purchase, but luckily I had some spare brown switches. Now it is my daily go-to keyboard. I even plan to buy another one to use in the office at work.

I would say once Keychron gets to the point when they can remove the shipping costs, they can attract way more newbies in the custom keyboards space (like myself) and dominate the market. For now, this shipping cost adds a lot of friction for the average consumer.

Gateron Phantom Yellow & Silver Switch version uses the double-shot ABS keycaps and aluminum plate.

Double-Gasket Design

Double Gasket Design is an industry innovative structure. In addition to the gaskets on the plates, we added silicone pads between the top and bottom cases. It significantly reduces the resonance between the metals, which in return, reduces the noise of the impacted metals. This Double-Gasket Structure allows the keyboard to maintain the flexibility of the gasket structure and make the overall typing sound better.

Please note that the knob color may be slightly different with the case (the blue and grey only) as these parts are manufactured separately.

Programmable Knob

Designed to enhance your creative workflow, the premium rotary encoder allows you to customize your favorite keys and macros through the innovative VIA software with ease.

Switch layouts between
macOS & Windows.

Built with the Mac users’ experience in mind while still retaining the compatibility for Windows devices, the Q1 is one of the only few in the market that comes with a Mac multimedia key layout for Mac enthusiasts. With VIA, you can configure your keymap for both Mac and Windows devices.

OSA Profile Double-shot PBT Keycaps

For the new double-shot PBT keycaps, we built a new profile. It has a similar height to that of the OEM profile and has an SA-like shape. We named it the OSA (OEM spherical angled) keycap. The PBT keycaps will provide excellent oil resistance, enhance the type feel, and prevent the legends from fading out.

Program The Q1 with
QMK & VIA.

With the Q1 ‘s open-source QMK/VIA, you can intuitively remap your favorite keys and create macros with any key (including the knob) on any operating system (macOS, Windows, or Linux) for a fluid workflow.

A brand new ultra-low-power Arm Cortex-M4 32-bit STM32L432 MCU which is powerful, and armed with 128K Flash will provide more flexibility for developers.

Hot-swappable

The hot-swappable sockets are mounted on the PCB, so you can install or change the switches without soldering. The PCB supports both 3 pin and 5 pin MX mechanical switches.

South-facing RGB LED Lights

The south-facing RGB is designed to better illuminate the keyboard backlight from the typist’s angle with the premium non-shine-through PBT keycaps installed. The south-facing RGB is also free from interference when the user installs Cherry-profile alternative keycaps on their keyboard.

Note: The Q1 V2's top case has sharper corners to make it much more compatible with third-party keycaps, such as MT3, SA, XDA, etc.

Pre-lubed Gateron G Pro Switch

Every detail counts when it comes to a premium typing experience. An optimized mold with more precise positioning and less wobbliness will certainly improve your fingertip feel. Pair that together with our revamped stabilizers and factory pre-lubed Gateron G Pro switches, a smooth travel experience is guaranteed.

All New Screw-In PCB Stabilizers

The screw-in design increases stability and makes it easier for changes and upgrades. Precise craftsmanship makes the stabilizers more stable and less wobbly. ANSI & ISO layouts

ISO layout is widely used in Europe while the ANSI layout is widely used by the rest of the world. If you live in Europe, we recommend you purchase the "Barebone ISO” version with the corresponding ISO Dye-sub PBT keycap sets together. The "Barebone ISO” is suitable for all ISO keyboard countries like the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, etc.
